Black Tar: The Basics


Black tar heroin is the product which results from a rough synthesis of an opioid closely related to morphine (morphine acetate muriate). The name may be misleading, as this substance does not always appear in the form of a dark tar, and may appear in various forms depending on the method used.

Black Tar Heroin generally contains a combination of very tightly related compounds, of which are precursors or metabolites of heroin itself; these contents include 6MAM, or 6-monoacetylmorphine, as well as a mixture of 3-monoacetylmorphine and 6-monoacetylmorphine, both of which together, form heroin (diacetylmorphine) itself, which is a combination of these two isomers. Both 3MAM and 6MAM are acetylated esters of morphine, when combined, form DI(two)acetylmorphine, aka heroin. The relative proportions of these precursors contained in a given batch of Black Tar is variable, thus potency and quality of effects will vary between each variety or source; a heavily experienced black tar user will often be able to distinguish between different batches and differing opioid-precursor content.

Black Tar is a relatively rough and cheap substance to manufacture, and the process is often done in small mobile laboratories located near the opium poppy fields. Most Black Tar supply within the US comes from Mexico and South America; and the substance is most common in the southwest area of the US.
